    Ich Identification: Oodinium & Cryptocaryon

Don't make the mistake of confusing Oodinium (Amyloodinium ocellatum - a.k.a. Velvet, or Coral Fish Disease) with White Spot Disease (Cryptocaryon irritans).  They are similar, but two quite different types of Saltwater Ich.  The key to successful parasite control is understanding both of these types of Ich and treating them accordingly.

Early, accurate diagnosis is very important as these parasites can readily complete their life cycle in an aquarium.  If not caught in time, or ignored, they can quickly reach numbers that overwhelm your fish, many times wiping a whole aquarium fish population out.

If you're just not sure which parasite you have, treat for both Oodinium and Cryptocaryon to be on the safe side.  Many times you will have both parasites present at the same time as well.

    Early Detection

Get to know your fish and how they act.  By doing this you can notice any changes in their normal characteristics, movements or habits, possibly flagging an Ich problem before it can take hold and get out of hand.
